Mob difficulty colors

This list shows you the color of a quest / mob, depending at your own level.

  • Gray mobs give no XP and reduced reputation
  • Gray players give no HKs
  • Quests 5 or more levels below you give reduced XP but full reputation

A quest or mob's difficulty color is sometimes referred to as its 'con'. IE: a gray-con mob, or something cons red. This is a holdover from MUD/MUSH/MUCKs where the standard command to determine difficulty was /con or /consider. Everquest1 had/has similar system in that you had to type the command. World of Warcraft has simplified the consider command in that it shows it every time you target something, and you can tell at a glance (once you are familiar with the system). Exceptions to the following are elites.

  • Grey mobs are well below you. You should have little difficulty dispatching them unless you are AFK during the whole fight or near death when you pick the fight up, regardless of class.
  • Green mobs are somewhat below you, and while one to three of them should pose little challenge to you (depending on your class), beware of large groups of them.
  • Yellow mobs are always within your character level. Make sure to give them your full attention and you should be able to kill them. ± 2.
  • Orange mobs are always 3 and 4 levels above you. Depending on your class, they are either to be avoided, or to be given your all to defeat.
  • Red mobs are always 5 though 9 levels above you. You should always avoid these if you can help it, or be well prepared if you can't or are summoning it for a quest. Even then, most classes should not try it.
  • Skull mobs are always 10 or more levels above you. Regardless of class, never, ever engage these mobs alone.
